Occupy Wall Street by Hannah K.

Eleven months ago, the despondent owner of an unlicensed Tunisian vegetable cart dramatically took his own life with a can of gasoline and a match. His suicide was totally self-driven and the ignition of a worldwide protest against oppressive authority was far outside the realm of his foresight. Almost a year later, however, left in his wake is a seemingly endless deluge of unrest streaming from the young minds of the world’s working class. Across the Atlantic, five Arab dictators have been deposed and swaths of the Middle East have been left in an indefinite state of upheaval. A protest of oppressive social and economic ‘regimes’ is under way even in democratically ruled countries. 951 cities in 82 countries have been officially ‘Occupied’ as of October 15, 2011. The causes and enemies of these protests are widely varied but a working-class revolution is common to all affected countries. An example is the protest of the economic ‘rule’ of the richest 1% of Americans by the protesters of Occupy Wall Street in New York City.

A self-described “people-powered movement,” Occupy Wall Street is the product of years of accumulated indignance. In keeping with the restriction of most American movements to being demonstrations of general rather than targeted unrest, the occupy movement technically lacks an official leader or agenda. Each resident of Liberty Square has his reasons for joining the occupation and almost all are differently motivated. Its occupants comprise the American proletariat. Many if not most of them house simple motivations, such as the loss of a job or a home, although veterans, political activists, and disaffected intellectuals are also abundant in this public space eight times the size of Bernie Madoff’s former Manhattan apartment. The Middle Eastern uprisings clearly defined an evil to be abolished: dictatorial rule. A walk through New York City’s Zuccotti Park, however, reveals a huge variety of supposed evils within our society. Pamphlets collected at organized New York protests may advertise communism or denounce 9/11 as an inside job, or, as is more typical, rail against the injustice of dominance by “the 1%”. From the inarticulate chaos of a protest, thousands of distinct voices emerge. Collected portraits of individual protesters create the only possible comprehensive portrait of the protest because the protest is no more than a conglomerate of voices. It is the capture of distinct voices that is the aim of these photographs.

The following is a piece on Eastway Deli Gourmet on East 16th Street in Manhattan. Eastway, known to many as “the Smelly Deli,” is the destination for most Upper Schoolers during lunchtime. Upon entering, you are always warmly welcomed by either Mike or Raffi, the owners of the deli, along with the cozy smell of lunch cooking. Each regular at the deli has his or her own special connection with the employees. Every visit to the deli is a unique one. Known for their premade sandwiches, the chicken parmesan is the most popular. The affordable prices and great food make Eastway Deli Gourmet an attractive destination for students at Friends Seminary.

Basketball Fundraiser by Maggie G.

Mapendo is a student run club at Friends Seminary, whose goal is to fundraise for the Mapendo International, an organization which helps refugees affected by war in Africa and works to reestablish these refugees in the United States. The goal of the club is to educate itsmembers and the community about the crisis facing these refugees.

Since the club began six years ago, Mapendo has held a 2 vs. 2 fundraising basketball tournament in the school gym once ayear. Teachers and students form teams and often dress up in costumes. There are two brackets: one for competitive players and one for people who just want to play for fun. Students have fun supporting their peers andteachers, while donating to a great cause!

Trading Floor by Alex G.

On first arriving at the trading floor of a large investment bank on Wall Street, my breath was taken away. There are rows and rows of people, the majority of which are men, working hard at up to five computer screens. Most people there have a separate job from the person next to them, ranging from setting up new markets to creating deals with clients and upholding the legal sides of transactions. The trading floor is a 24-hour room because the shifts for the workers either start 7 am and end at 7 pm, or begin and 7pm and end at 7 am for the people on the Asian market. Each person has to not only take in a tremendous amount of information, but also make decisions quickly based on the most up-to-date information. A day in the life of a worker on the trading floor is a constant stream of work and pressure, so I hope these pictures can illustrate this fact.
